COURSE INFORMATION 2009
Intermediate
English –
this course is recognised all over Australia
21936 VIC Certificate I in ESL
(Access
part of the ESL Frameworks curriculum - is
nationally recognised and accredited under the Victorian Registration
and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and is recognised under the
Australian Training Framework.
This means that
this course is recognised all over Australia, and the parts achieved
while studying at Sussex Neighbourhood House can be built on when
studying this Certificate in other registered training organisations.
Students successfully completing this course will receive a Statement of
Attainment at the Certificate Presentation Day on 7 December 2009.
Dates & Times
This course is
offered part-time, 6hours per week, Tuesday and Thursday 9.30am –
12.30pm
Classes begin Tuesday 27 January –and
run until 7 December 2009
Dates follow school terms with no
classes in school holidays, or public holidays
Enrolment
Students can enter the course at any
time, but it is recommended that students begin in January and attend
for the full year.
New students must make an appointment
to see Leigh Cook, the Further Education Co-ordinator phone on
03 9350 4624 to discuss the right
level of course for them before starting in the class. You are welcome
to bring an interpreter or a friend to this appointment.
Course Delivery
Teachers are fully qualified and
where possible will be assisted by a volunteer in the classroom.
Students will have access to computers as a learning tool. At least one
class per week will be held in the computer room. Computer experience is
not required. It is
important for students to practice their English between classes.
Course Content
There are 8 units in this course.
Students must successfully complete all 8 units over a period of 18
months to 2 years (490 to 500 hours).

A detailed
Student Information Booklet is available. Students are required to bring
a notebook, pen, pencil and eraser. The use of a bilingual dictionary is
strongly encouraged - if you have one, bring it with you
Student Support
You are always welcome to talk to your teacher of the Further Education
Co-ordinator if there is anything that you are not happy about, or that
is worrying you. If you have a complaint or a grievance, it will be
respected and dealt with in line with the House policy and procedures.
Fees
Fees for this course are subsidized by the Victorian State Government
through Adult Community & Further Education (ACFE), so several rules
apply to the fees that must be charged.
The standard tuition fee is $304 for the year, and is due
at the beginning of the year.
Concession Fees
are available to holders of Commonwealth Health Care Cards, Pensioner
Concession Cards and Veteran’s Gold Cards. The concession fee for
tuition is $55 for the full year.
Students who are not permanent residents, or whose fees are paid by a
government agency will be charged at a rate of $6.23 per hr ($346 per
term).

Further Education
Co-ordinator about your eligibility, or if you have difficulties with
payments you are welcome to discuss a payment plan or a hardship
application with the Further Education Co-ordinator.
