INFORMATION 2009
COURSE:
Advanced
English –
this course is recognised all over
21932VIC Certificate II in ESL
(Access)
is a qualification nationally recognised and
accredited under the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority
(VRQA). It is recognised under the Australian Training Framework.
This means that
this course is recognised all over Australia, and the parts achieved
while studying at Sussex Neighbourhood House can be built on when
studying this Certificate in other registered training organisations.
Dates & Times I
Enrolment
Students can enter the course at any
time, but it is recommended that students begin in January and attend
for the full year.
New students must make an appointment
to see the Further Education Co-ordinator to discuss the right level of
course for them, to complete the enrolment forms and receive the
information they need. Phone Leigh Cook 0n (03) 9350 4624. You are
welcome to bring an interpreter or a friend to this appointment if you
need extra help.
Course Delivery
Teachers hold all the required
qualifications to teacher this course, and where possible will be
assisted by a volunteer in the classroom.
Students will have access to
computers as a learning tool. At least one class per week will be held
in the computer training room. Students may also use our public access
computers during other nominated times
There are many different ways to learn and in this class you will read,
write, speak, go out into the community. It will also be important for
students to practice their English outside of the class.
Course Content
J
The
delivery on Wednesday’s will be divided into 2 parts. The morning
session will include all reading, writing and grammar language
activities. The afternoon will involve listening, speaking, discussions
supported by language learning games, plays, documentaries, films and
current affairs. There is computer access during both sessions. With a
whole day of English studies we are able to go on excursions, locally
and further afield to reinforce classroom learning. There will be
sufficient breaks to have a mental catnap.

Student
Resources
A detailed
Student Information Booklet is freely available from the office. If you
wish to discuss anything about your class, your learning or your
learning options and future directions please feel free to talk to your
teacher or Leigh Cook (Further Education Co-ordinator).
Students are not
required to purchase any learning materials but are asked to bring a
notebook, pen, pencil and eraser. A floppy disc for the saving of
student work will be supplied or students can bring their own memory
stick. The use of a bilingual dictionary is strongly encouraged - if you
have one, bring it with you
Student Support
You are always welcome to talk to your teacher of the Further Education
Co-ordinator if there is anything that you are not happy about, or that
is worrying you. If you have a complaint or a grievance, it will be
respected and dealt with in line with the House policy and procedures.
Childcare
If you need childcare while you are attending your class, please talk to
us in the office and we will try to arrange a place for your child in
advance. Limited places are available and a fee applies. There will be
an application form(s) to fill in before your child can begin.
Fees
Fees for this course are subsidised by the Victorian State Government
through Adult Community & Further Education (ACFE), so several rules
apply to the fees that must be charged.
For students who are eligible for ACFE funding the standard tuition fee
is $321 for the year, and is due at the beginning of the year.
For students who are NOT eligible for ACFE funding the Fee For Service
fee applies (see the brochure for details) and can be paid by the term.

Further Education
Co-ordinator about your eligibity.
If you have difficulties with payments you are welcome to discuss a
payment plan or a hardship application with the Further Education
Co-ordinator.
Assessment
Assessment may
sound worrying now, but you will feel comfortable in your class, and it
will be worth it when you are awarded your certificate.
All students
have the right to request that they not be assessed. Please advise your
tutor if you do not wish to be assessed.
Students work
and progress will be assessed against the performance criteria and
evidence required to demonstrate competency in the unit. Assessment will
be through a mixture of class exercises and tutor observation during the
course. Students successfully completing this course will receive a
Statement of Attainment at the Certificate Presentation Day on 7
December 2009.
Pathways
Students who successfully complete
this certificate course (21932VIC Certificate II in ESL (Access) can
move on to the next level 21933VIC Certificate III in ESL (Access), this
is not offered at Sussex Neighbourhood House, but is available at other
RTO’s and at TAFE.
